MONDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Los Angeles Kings in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

MONDAY: Funny Side Up Productions presents The Big Smoke Show, a cannabis-friendly, all-female night of standup comedy at the New Amsterdam Cafe featuring Cass Furman, Greta Lin, Emily Qureshi, Colleen Thompson, Pantha, and headliner Jane Stanton.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: 31 emerging and seasoned local designers and makers were selected to create 22 objects made from vintage mahogany for Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project, running until August 7 at the Museum of Vancouver.

MONDAY & WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: the work of late Trinidadian-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos is featured in the career retrospective Denyse Thomasos: just beyond, running until April 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Reverend Horton Heat play the Rickshaw

TUESDAY: Texas psychobilly band Reverend Horton Heat, featuring guitarist-vocalist Jim Heath, plays the Rickshaw Theatre, with guests Dale Watson and Jason D. Williams. SOLD OUT. Here’s my interview with Heath from 1995.

TUESDAY: the Friends of Chamber Music present the Fauré Piano Quartet at the Vancouver Playhouse in a program of late Romanticism that contrasts Mahler and Brahms masterworks with Fauré’s refined music.

TUESDAY: 10-piece Vancouver rhythm & blues ensemble the R&B Allstars plays New Westminster’s Anvil Theatre as part of the Jazz at the Anvil series.

WEDNESDAY: Cannabis & Sound Mediation at the Stretch Space co-facilitated by music therapist and yoga teacher Navin Sahjpaul and RN and psychedelic-assisted therapy nurse Alexia Maynard.

The Stars are in town

THURSDAY: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Dallas Stars in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

THURSDAY: Foodstock at Night is a a battle of the bands fundraiser at the Cobalt benefitting the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, featuring performances by Bloom Effect, Good Goin’. Mivule, Uncle Strut, and Victoria Groff.

WEDNESDAY TO FRIDAY: through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia offers an account of infamous feminist art collective Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions, running until June 2 at the Polygon Gallery.

Shred Kelly plays the Biltmore

FRIDAY: Fernie, B.C. folk-rock quartet Shred Kelly plays the Biltmore Cabaret as part of its Blurry Vision album-release tour, with guests Hyaenas. Here’s my interview with Shred Kelly’s Jim Newton (no relation) from 2021.

FRIDAY: Caravan World Rhythms presents a performance at New Westminster’s Massey Theatre by DakhaBrakha, a world-music quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine.

FRIDAY: American standup comedian Chelsea Handler performs the first of two nights at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre as part of her Little Big Bitch Tour.

Down by Law screens at the Rio

FRIDAY: late-night screening at the Rio Theatre of Down by Law, writer-director Jim Jarmusch‘s neo-Beat 1986 noir comedy, starring Tom WaitsRoberto Benigni, and John Lurie.
